    maps (google-like) with slider to go backwards in time (e.g. 1840, 14th cent, 25CE whatever).

    Google Earth is already doing this. Check out ancient Rome.

Called the David Rumsey Maps Island , the Second Life site is San Francisco map collector David Rumsey's latest high-technology plan to share his collection with as large an audience as possible.
