The old adage of Build It And They Will Come simply doesn’t work with many Future Users. Sustained engagement demands not only an innovative product but a shake-up in the way we traditionally go about identifying relevance and creating useful solutions, typically using widespread or mundane technology and platforms (such as the ubiquitous mobile phone, GPS and RFID) that’s just applied to cool effect. 4iP have already established a strong pedigree of encouraging forward-thinking and inventive ways to reach out to millions of people who would otherwise happily let the digital revolution pass them by.

BarCamp Sheffield has evolved to Unsheffield. We’re taking the technology unconference format to a broader public. We pushed some of the boundaries of BarCamps last year, and we’re continuing to do so this year under our new name, which is intended to reflect its broader content, format and appeal.

The principles of participant-generated content still remain at the heart of the event, and we’re encouraging a strong focus around the event theme - Future Users of Cool Technology. Integral with the unconference will be public workshops that create a bridge between local and regional talent and the international event and its contributors.

At the GeekUp Sheffield birthday party we laid out some of the plans for this year’s flagship grassroots digital event. In keeping with the Future Users theme, we’re looking for public spaces to extend the unconference to public workshops and symposia, thereby spreading the joy of techs to non-geeks in the city and region.

Do get in touch if you have an activity or space you would like to contribute as part of the Unsheffield programme.
Unsheffield fka BarCamp Sheffield

Okay it’s rough to criticise the work of Alvin Toffler, nearly 40 years after he published ‘Future Shock‘. But while Toffler’s key premise - that the shift from an industrial age to a post-industrial, highly technology-mediated society would leave us all feeling rather disconnected and over stressed - may have some merit in terms of information overload, it’s perhaps not quite as stressful and certainly a more connected existence we have been living in technologically developed societies since the early 1990s. With mass adoption of mobile communications devices and the development of graphical browsers for the World Wide Web we have steadily been forging and reinforcing links between ourselves, and expecting others to always be available, for help to be at hand, and for new connections to be created daily, on the basis of shared interest or a common goal.

So while Toffler may have got the notion of technological expansion right, there are serious flaws in his sense that we’d all be rather unhappy about it. In fact, as more contexts for communication and collaboration emerge, the ‘happiness’ of users of digital media tends to grow. Indeed if anyone is feeling stressed and disconnected it is those who lack either the literacy or the infrastructure to participate.
