Made in Unsheffield: Shacknet holds inaugural meetup

It started off life as an Inspired Idea at Unsheffield and now Shacknet has officially launched with its inaugural meetup. A mouth-watering demo, a call for projects and exciting news about Sheffield’s homegrown FabLab project were all on the agenda. Plans for the future are exciting and unfolding – this promises to be a group to keep your eyes on.

USE Stimulus Lineup Announced

The submissions have come in, and the final line-up has been decided. Many thanks to all who sent in their ideas and talks. Congratulations to the speakers who have been selected to present on the event theme Future Users of Cool Technology at the inaugural Unsheffield USE Stimulus night at 7pm Friday 19 June.

Us Now Documentary Screenings

Screening as part of Unsheffield, the Us Now documentary tells the stories of online networks such as Couchsurfing, Ebbsfleet United and Zopa that are challenging the existing notion of hierarchy, and explores the implications of mass collaboration and the internet on government. Showing at the Showroom cinema at 9pm Friday June 19, 8pm Saturday June 20 and 7pm Sunday June 21. Tickets are available from the Showroom website or box office and are free to the general public.

Open Invite to Social Media Surgery

Unsheffield wants to help organisations from the region get going with new social technologies that can further their causes. The Social Media Surgery will be open as a drop-in from 11am to 5pm on both Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21. There is no need to book a place, just come along to the Showroom Cinema and find out how easily technology can make a difference to your cause.

Scratch Game Workshop

We are delighted to announce a free workshop for children and parents to learn the basics of Scratch to explore creativity through technology. Scratch allows young people to make their own interactive art and computer games, and was used to create the Avatars displayed in the Showroom Cinema during Unsheffield and the Sheffield Children’s Festival.

4iP

The old adage of Build It And They Will Come simply doesn’t work with many Future Users. Sustained engagement demands not only an innovative product but a shake-up in the way we traditionally go about identifying relevance and creating useful solutions, typically using widespread or mundane technology that’s just applied to cool effect. 4iP have already established a strong pedigree of encouraging forward-thinking and inventive ways to reach out to millions of people who would otherwise happily let the digital revolution pass them by.

Technophobia

However impressive a piece of technology is in terms of what it can help us achieve, its usefulness is inevitably limited by its usability. Good ergonomic and human interface design are critical for making software and physical technology solutions that are intuitive enough for people to just get on with effectively using, rather than battling with. TechnoPhobia understand that people drive the software tools they create; their approach to design and development is in absolute keeping with our theme of reducing the barriers to engagement for Future Users of Cool Technology. We’re more than just a little bit pleased that this local company is helping us deliver Unsheffield.

Unsheffield Open for Participation

Tickets for Unsheffield are now available on a per-day basis. The event begins on Friday evening with the USE Stimulus session to kick-start the event and shape the thought map and agenda for the weekend. We have a full day of session slots for both Saturday and Sunday (running to around 6pm), and encourage participants to come for the whole weekend to make the most of the Unsheffield experience.

Call for Social Media Surgeons

Unsheffield is building on the legacy of the BashMash voluntary collaboration days to bootstrap a Social Media Surgery for Sheffield’s voluntary and third sector. We’re inviting bloggers and social media experts in the region to become Social Media Surgeons for the weekend and share their skills and experience. Surgery will be open Sat 20 and Sun 21 Jun, and Surgeons will be guaranteed tickets for the event on the days they can contribute.
