When Richard Rixham ran his Arduino session for the first time at Unsheffield, it went down so well that he had to run it again. It’s no surprise then that the idea of a local hardware hacking club was put forward and led the running for the Inspired Ideas Surgery.
Over the past couple of months Jim Methley and Richard have been pulling together a community of like-minded tinkerers under the name of Shacknet. Over a dozen circuit-board wielding hackers showed up for the inaugural meeting that took place on Thursday 20 August 2009, shrewdly choosing this event over U2′s local arena performance.
- Jim Methley talked about the origin and goals for the group
- Richard Rixham did a taster demonstration showing off the simplicity and ease of controlling Arduino
- James Wallbank of the Access Space open source media lab talked about a new grassroots FabLab project in Sheffield
There was plenty of discussion about some really exciting ideas that the group want to undertake, including an epic project that individual members of the group can contribute to in modular style as their skills grow. I’m also looking forward to ways in which the Shacknet collective can collaborate with BashMash and the FabLab to help make grassroots contributions to the local community.
Shacknet will continue to meet on the third Thursday of every month. The next meeting – 17 Sep 2009 – should be in the FabLab at Access Space on 1 Sidney Street, Sheffield S1 4RG. Keep an eye on the Shacknet website for the latest information and details of how to get involved.

There is an exciting opportunity to work with Access Space in building stuff that will help build other stuff. This will tie in with the FabLab that Access Space is building. If anyone has any ideas for projects for machines that can build stuff that helps to build other stuff then pleaswe post your ideas on the shacknetwork.co.uk site.
Thanks,Richard
