University of Sheffield Enterprise

Social enterprise and pragmatic innovation feature significantly in the Unsheffield programme. When technology and social research in academic circles are combined with industry research there are great opportunities to produce progressive solutions that provide real life-changing value to people. The Stimulus night that kicks off Unsheffield will serve up a smorgasbord of ideas that point the way forward for makers and users of technology, and we’re delighted that the University of Sheffield Enterprise have joined Unsheffield as event partner to help make this happen.

The University’s involvement in Unsheffield goes beyond supporting the Stimulus night.  We are keen to make sure that students from a range of disciplines can get involved with the programme and really benefit from sharing time with the thought leaders and grassroots practitioners that will make up the bulk of the participant list.  Our goal is for representatives of the emerging generation of business, social and creative leaders to come away with a better handle on how and why practical technology is significant in the world they are going on to shape, and the role they can play in leveraging it to do sustainable good.

We’re also very pleased that the University of Sheffield have taken this step forward in answer to the call for universities to get more involved in the digital inclusion agenda.  There’s no doubt that there’s a digitial divide, and one of the first steps to bridging that is to get the institutions who are in a position to address that working from the same page, and Unsheffield provides exactly that kind of forum.

As well as identifying opportunities for bridging the digital divide, we also expect participants of the event will come away with a deeper understanding of how to effectively generate routes to previously hidden digital markets, and to transform existing markets by creative and intelligent use of technology.

The Unsheffield USE Stimulus night takes place on Fri 19 Jun 2009 from 7pm. The deadline for submissions is Sun 14 Jun 2009.

SERX Enterprising Ideas Competition

University of Sheffield Enterprise is delighted to sponsor Unsheffield. We work with all our students to develop their enterprise knowledge and skills within and alongside their academic courses. Our graduates work in all sectors of the economy and are often attracted to the creative and digital sector and keen to stay in Sheffield.

Our sponsorship of the Stimulus evening at Unsheffield this year is especially aimed at encouraging the development of new business ideas with a social impact to feed into our Enterprising Ideas Business Planning Competition. The competition is open to 2009 graduates and is funded through HEFCE’s Economic Challenge Investment Fund (more details on www.serx.org.uk)

University of Sheffield Enterprise also has a strong interest in social enterprise. We established our Social Enterprise Research and Knowledge Exchange partnership (SERX) in 2008 working with local partners including SCEDU and regional and national partners, including the British Library and the Employee Ownership Association.
