Hybrid model, using laptop parts in pcs, more energy efficient, but the higher density laptop parks have more embedded CO2 cost.

PCs probably spending 5% of their power – we need to change minimum power consumption of the unit, eg. sleep mode when not required.

Take visual cues from webcam to use for energy efficiency. Take a frame every half a second looking for a face, if theres no one looking at the screen turn off.

When not using all parts of pc can parts be turned off or under-clocked?

Got  a 3.3Ghz dual core pc running a  at 24watts.

There are manufacturers out there that have very good environmental policies, like Intel, but there are others out there aiming to produce at the lowest price.

German standard called Blue Angel is one of the few solid standards that don’t get ‘gimmicky’ like the EPEAT standard.

Servers are also a concern, particularly when you consider one server running around the clock has a carbon footprint the size of a Land Rover.

In carbon footprint analysis the thin client system has a bigger carbon footprint than energy efficient desktops.
