Hannah York: Inclusion: Who, What, Why?

Esmail from Sudan wanted a job using computers but had never used a keyboard before. How do we factor in the time it would take to train people to use computers from scratch?

Elderly user requested software age banded, to make it easy to see where to start.

When we think about inclusion we need to think of the severe consequences for some users.

Example of woman who downloaded 18 songs illegally from the internet and got a $2 million fine.

Digital inclusion: the problem of connecting those in rural areas. Example of Helen Anderson who set up her own network in her area.

Is it possible for the internet to bring us together on local issues?

Do we need to push technology to people? You could have access but still not feel included.

Scams on the internet. Something that’s always been done, but now faster and targeted at more.

Having internet access can make it easy to avoid other social interactions. Are twitter interactions qualitatively less important?

How do we make the software and hardware we build usable by someone who does not even know they need it yet?

There are people who buy technology thinking they need it but if it does not meet their accessibility needs they will often end up feeling stupid or left out.
